Peatland Restoration ProjectÂ
Our pupils recently took part in an exciting educational experience focused on peatland conservation and biodiversity, in partnership with the Ulster Wildlife Trust/An Creggan and and Mc Erlane at the Seven Sisters.
The day began with a visit to Murrins Bog, where pupils explored this unique habitat and learned about its vital role in supporting wildlife and combating climate change. Back at school, we welcomed representatives from the Wildlife Trust, who delivered an engaging talk on the importance of peatland restoration and how these ecosystems help store carbon and protect biodiversity.
As part of the discussion, pupils discovered that, alongside managing their own peatland nature reserves, conservation teams are restoring a range of important sites across Northern Ireland. These include the vast blanket bogs of Mullaghcarn Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) in Co Tyrone—home to species such as hen harriers and red grouse.
To round off the day, pupils were treated to festive sweets and selection boxes as a thank-you for their enthusiasm and participation. This project not only deepened their understanding of environmental issues but also reinforced our commitment to sustainability and caring for our planet.
