Sensory Room

At St Brigid’s, our sensory room is an integral part of our inclusive school environment and is available to children every day. Pupils are encouraged and supported to access the sensory room whenever they feel it is necessary, helping them to regulate, refocus and feel ready to learn.

Purpose of the Sensory Room

The sensory room provides a calm, safe and supportive space where children can:

  • Regulate their emotions and sensory needs
  • Take time to feel calm and settled
  • Reduce anxiety or sensory overload
  • Build self‑awareness and independence
  • Return to the classroom feeling ready and confident

Access to the room is flexible and responsive, ensuring pupils feel supported at the point of need.

Benefits for Children

The sensory room supports children by:

  • Promoting emotional wellbeing and self‑regulation
  • Supporting positive behaviour for learning
  • Increasing confidence and engagement in the classroom
  • Helping pupils develop strategies they can use throughout the school day

These benefits support not only children with additional needs, but all pupils who may need time to regulate.

Benefits for Staff

For staff, the sensory room:

  • Provides an effective, proactive support strategy
  • Helps maintain calm, focused learning environments
  • Supports early intervention and emotional regulation
  • Strengthens consistent, inclusive practice across the school

Staff work collaboratively to ensure the room is used positively and purposefully.

Embedded in Everyday Practice

Use of the sensory room is embedded into daily school practice and reflects our whole‑school commitment to inclusion, wellbeing and understanding individual needs. Strategies used within the sensory room are reinforced back in the classroom, supporting continuity and consistency for pupils.

The sensory room plays an important role in supporting our ethos of care, nurture and respect and contributes to a welcoming environment where every child feels safe, valued and understood.
