Whole School Visit to the Ulster American Folk Park
Our whole school enjoyed a wonderful educational visit to the Ulster American Folk Park, where pupils had the chance to step back in time and experience what life was like for children long ago.
One of the highlights of the day was visiting the old schoolhouse. Pupils learned about the strict punishments that were once used, the limited curriculum, and the very different expectations placed on children. Many were surprised to discover that pupils often walked long distances to school, sometimes in bare feet, while carrying turf to help keep the classroom fire going. Lessons focused heavily on reading, writing, and arithmetic, often for long periods with very little break.
Dressed in period clothing, our pupils truly embraced the experience. They quickly realised how fortunate they are that school life has changed so much! Their delight and sometimes shock added great excitement to the day.
This trip provided a valuable real-life learning experience that enriched our curriculum. It helped pupils develop a deeper understanding of history, appreciate the progress made in education, and make meaningful connections to their classroom learning.
A fantastic and memorable day was had by all.
